What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder that causes pain and achiness throughout the body, generalized fatigue, and many other associated symptoms. It affects between 3-6% of the United States population, and is more common in women. Although the exact cause of fibromyalgia has not yet been determined, it is believed a sleep disturbance creates a neuro-hormonal imbalance that ultimately leads to the changes found in fibromyalgia.
Diagnosement of Fibromyalgia
To diagnose fibromyalgia, the following criteria must be met:
- Widespread joint and muscle pain that has been present for at least three monthsÂ
- Pain at 11 or more of the 18 specific tender/trigger points when those areas are pressed
Studies suggest that chiropractic care may be able to provide some relief for fibromyalgia sufferers. A study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in May 2000 showed a significant reduction in pain intensity and improvement in sleep and overall fatigue in 60% of the patients who underwent a series of chiropractic treatments.
Can Chiropractic Help Fibromyalgia?
Dr. Emily Brueggeman has spoken at several community events about fibromyalgia, how it develops, how it is diagnosed, and how it is treated. She has also treated numerous patients with fibromyalgia, and helped many people reduce their pain and get back to the activities they enjoy. Dr. Brueggeman uses very gentle chiropractic adjustments and muscle stretching techniques to restore joint motion and reduce tender point sensitivity. These treatments are gentle enough to be used with fibromyalgia sufferers without causing additional pain or tenderness. Dr. Brueggeman also counsels fibromyalgia patients about nutrition and exercise, which can also be used to improve the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
