Pain During Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time of rapid body changes and hormonal fluctuations. During pregnancy, up to 50% of women will experience low back pain. Many will also experience problems such as sciatic pain, pelvic joint pain, and midback pain. Joint pains are common during pregnancy due to hormones that cause ligament laxity, and a shift in the weight bearing structures with growth of the baby. Medication is not often used for these problems during pregnancy, and many women are told to just deal with the pain until delivery.
Chiropractic Relief for Pregnancy Pain
Chiropractic care can often provide relief for many of these aches and pains during pregnancy. Chiropractic adjustments restore normal motion to joints that are under additional strain during pregnancy. Dr. Emily Brueggeman modifies the adjustments that are used during pregnancy. Most adjustments are performed with the patient seated, and decompression of the muscles and joints is often performed with the patient lying on their side. There are also adjustments that can be used to relieve the intensely painful pubic pain that some women experience during the last trimester of pregnancy.
Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
Studies have shown chiropractic care to be effective at reducing symptoms, such as low back pain, during pregnancy. Often women who are receiving chiropractic care report a significant improvement in their comfort level when compared to previous pregnancies. Also, some women report faster and more comfortable deliveries when compared to previous deliveries.
Dr. Brueggeman enjoys working with women during their pregnancies, and will coordinate care with the Obstetrician as necessary. She has met several area Obstetricians, and our office receives referrals from Obstetric offices. To learn more about chiropractic care during pregnancy, read our pregnancy article.
